'Relations between Zimbabwe and the West hit a new low yesterday after a convoy of British and American diplomats on their way to meet opposition activists was attacked by President Mugabe’s militiamen and police.

despite wining the first election the nation is going to have to go through a second round of election in zimbabwe and depsite fears for his own safety tsvangirai is going to return to his country to run another contest - mugabe has bought enough time already to start a terror campaign to influence the second round of votes and it seems he has more terror tactics to deploy since no dates have been set for the next election.

the timeframe seems to be anything from one month to a year according to news reports but the MDC are extremely worried about campaigning - tapiwa mudiwa is a an MDC supporter who was quoted to ask "How are we going to campaign in the run-off as MDC supporters? We can't wear MDC T-shirts. We fear we can't even go for rallies. Cars are being burned."

this is from the independent on-line : Two of nature’s most spectacular forces produced an incredible brew in the skies of Chile as a volcanic eruption met a lightning storm. Tonnes of dust and ash from the eruption of the Chaitén volcano poured into the night sky just as an electric storm passed overhead. The resulting collision created a spectacular sight as lightning flickered around the dust cloud amid the orange glow of the volcano.

The eruption was all the more spectacular because the Chaitén volcano, 800 miles south of Santiago has been dormant for hundreds, if not thousands of years. The Patagonian volcano began erupting on Friday and the 12-mile-high plume has left vast tracts of land coated with a layer of ash.

Authorities in Chile were worried by the violence of the eruption yesterday when lava spewed out with increased ferocity and ordered the evacuation of the remaining 300 people from the area. More than 4,000 people had already been evacuated from the town of Chaitén, which is six miles from the volcano. Luis Lara, a government geologist, said “The entire volcano will not collapse, but the eruptive column could and that is sufficient material to be displaced into areas nearby. Lava flow would not reach Chaitén but hot fragments, ash and gas could.”

Authorities are evacuating a second town, Futaleufú, which has been coated with ash. Many of Futaleufú’s 1,000 or so residents had crossed into Argentina, where some areas have also been showered with ash. Last week Argentine authorities closed schools and treated a number of people for breathing problems.

the olympic torch is due to be taken to the summit of everest as part of it's world tour and bejing has insisted that napalese soldiers shoot protesters on sight - the authorities expelled journalists from the base camp of the mountain as part of a ban on reporting and banned climbing near the summit from may 1 to 10

she sells herself to buy bread - she has no choice - all those around her are dying of aids - she is used and abused by her people and her government - a government that does not care about her, or the many others just like her in harare - the international community do nothing - why - because zimbabwe does not have the attraction of oil fields - because oil is more important than humans - she sells herself whilst the UN sell their soul and the US sell OIL

riots in haiti - presidential palace stormed

Thousands of Haitians rioted and looted shops in Port-au-Prince, rising food prices around the world have hit Haiti particularly hard and many complain that the President has not done enough to feed the people. Protesters stormed the presidential palace demanding food and demanded the resignation of President Rene Preval. Demonstrators set up barricades and burnt tires in the capital and UN peacekeepers fired rubber bullets into the crowd, looters set UN bases on fire as they blame UN peacekeepers for the rising prices. The protests left five people dead and several injured.

The patients at Louisa Guidotti hospital said there were eight men, one carrying a shotgun, another with an AK-47, others with pistols, and they went from bed to bed forcing out anyone who could walk. Nurses were dragged away from the sick. Motorists driving by the hospital, 87 miles north-east of Harare, were stopped and taken from their cars. About 70 people were gathered in the grounds. Then the lecture began. "This is your last chance," said one of the armed men. "You messed up when you voted. Next time you vote you must get it right or you will die."

One of the men selected people to stand and shout slogans of Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF party and to sing songs from the liberation war . Those who did not do so enthusiastically were beaten. President Robert Mugabe was accused today of deploying his army to invade more than a quarter of white-owned farms in Zimbabwe. Trevor Gifford, the president of the Commercial Farmer's Union, told The Times he had documentary evidence that army officers were masquerading as war veterans, the group blamed for taking over more than 60 farms since Saturday. Only about 200 white farmers are left in Zimbabwe - 5 per cent of the total eight years ago.

“We were passed a document which makes Mugabe’s involvement clear,” he told The Times. “It says that 200 serving senior offices of the Armed Forces will be participating in the ‘exercise’. They will be commanding other war veterans and Zanu (PF). Teams will be deployed on April 8, 2008 to campaign for R Mugabe in the run off under the guise of war veterans. Zimbabwe’s generals occupy no official posts in its ruling party, but analysts said they will play a crucial role in Mr Mugabe’s drive to stay in power.
