Every now and then I venture out of the neighbourhood, out of the familiar groups in the hope of finding something new, another group that i have not picked up on, another artist somewhere who's music or photography has thus far escaped me, normally i find some but today i found scary land > http://wickeddoll.vox.com/profile/neighbors/

rokolectiv - bucharest is the new berlin - multimedia electronica

In art and music circles, bucharest is being branded the 'new berlin' thanks to its creative scene. The highlight of the hipster year is undoubtedly the rokolectiv festival for electronic music and related arts from 11-13 April.
The line-up includes dat politics, underground resistance, and the 79-year-old electronic pioneer jean-jacques perrey. One of the real attractions is the venue apparently - the last day of the festival will be held in the mnac gallery in a wing of the gargantuan house of the people. The world has been invited to enjoy a beer and some far-out sounds in the second-largest building in the world.

Zimbabwe's opposition says it will bring the government to its knees with Kenya-style mass protests if President Robert Mugabe carries out extensive plans to rig tomorrow's presidential and parliamentary elections. But Mugabe has vowed to use the army to crush any demonstrations and warned Zimbabweans not to waste their votes on opposition candidates who would never be allowed to take power.

Mugabe, 84, would struggle to extend his 28-year rule in a clean election, amid widespread hunger, mass unemployment, 100,000% inflation and a currency that devalues so fast that the few people with jobs are paid in billions of Zimbabwe dollars. Election monitoring groups say the ruling Zanu-PF party has printed millions of extra ballots, intimidated rural voters by threatening their food supply, permitted police into polling booths to "help" voters, and rigged the electoral roll. Alternative rock group the Smashing Pumpkins are suing their record label, claiming it used their name and music in promotional deals with Pepsi and Amazon without permission. The group, headed by Billy Corgan, was signed to Virgin Records in the US for 17 years but yesterday claimed its only existing agreement covered the right to sell digital downloads and not the right to use the band's image in promotional campaigns. The supreme court ruled yesterday that US courts are not bound by the international court of justice or by direct orders from the president when it refused to allow a fresh hearing for a Mexican on death row. In a 6-3 decision, the supreme court ruled that courts in Texas were not compelled to comply with a ruling from the ICJ to allow a new hearing for the Mexican inmate because he had not been given access to consular assistance. State courts were also not obliged to follow orders from George Bush who had instructed Texas to comply with the ICJ.

The decision could put the US at odds with EU countries and Mexico which had urged the supreme court to order a new hearing for José Ernesto Medellín. It was also a rebuff for Bush who had been put in the awkward position of trying to shield Medellín, a gang member convicted in 1993 of raping and strangling to death two teenage girls. The intervention was all the more difficult for Bush because Texas is his home state. As governor he signed the death warrant for more than 150 prisoners.

The supreme court decided yesterday that in the Medellín case Bush had overstepped his powers by instructing the Texas courts to comply with the ICJ. In its 2004 ruling on behalf of Medellín and some 50 other Mexican inmates on death row, the ICJ had held Texas in breach of the Vienna convention, which gives prisoners in foreign jails the right to seek assistance from their home country. Medellín and other Mexicans on death row were not given consular access to Mexican diplomats before their trial. [source the guardian]

iraq - the battle for basra - on the run

A 38-year-old witness who is an employee in a state-run factory in the Hayyaniya area in Basra - the stronghold of the Mahdi army - told the Guardian that clashes erupted around 2am on Tuesday when Iraqi soldiers tried to enter the area. He said: "No Iraqi army units actually entered the area in my street. The whole street is mined. The Mahdi army fighters are talking about their other units capturing Iraqi army soldiers and armoured vehicles."

The Associated Press reported residents of one neighbourhood have said Mahdi army snipers were firing from rooftops. Others fired rocket-propelled grenades at the troops, then drove away on motorcycles. Some local people said police fled their posts. Video footage showed smoke rising over Basra and ambulances speeding through the streets taking the wounded to hospitals. Iraqi police and soldiers prevented journalists from reaching the areas of heaviest fighting. An Iraqi military spokesman, Col Karim al-Zaidi, admitted that his troops were facing stiff resistance. Curfews were imposed throughout much of southern and central Iraq as concern rose about the consequences of the fighting in Basra. British military officials reported that the streets of Basra were quiet after a curfew was imposed.

you walk to the shops and get covered in snow and find it delightful - you still want to go out in the rain to play and get totally drenched - rainbows still amaze you even though you understand how they are formed and you still want to try to reach the end somehow and touch it, if only for just a few seconds
